How to Add Flaxseed to Your Diet

Flaxseed is often listed in nutritional articles as a food that offers numerous health benefits. But how does one eat flaxseed, and why should you bother?

Flaxseeds and flax seed oil come from a blue flowering plant known as linum usitatissimum. The seeds of this plant have been shown to improve constipation, reduce cardiovascular diseases and even help reduce the risk for certain types of cancer. It’s believed that the fiber and omega-3 fatty acids contained in flaxseeds are primarily responsible for these health benefits. Flax oil has also been shown to have a positive effect on cardiovascular health.

The easiest way to add flaxseeds to your diet is to grind them, which can be done using a coffee grinder or blender. Once ground, you can easily add the flaxseeds to many foods, including yogurts, breakfast cereals, and smoothies.

Flax oil, which can be purchased at health food stores, can be incorporated into your diet by in marinades or salad dressings. Try using it as a replacement or in combination with other oils in your cooking and food preparation.

Store flaxseed and flax oil in a cool, dark place, such as your refrigerator or freezer, to prevent them from going rancid. When grinding flaxseed, only grind what you’ll be using immediately.
