5 Ways to Keep on Track During the Holidays

5 Ways to Keep on Track During the HolidaysThe holidays can be especially challenging while you are  engaged in a medical weight loss program. Remember these survival tips to make your holidays smoother and less stressful.

1. Eat before you go to the party.

Having a healthy meal before going to holiday gatherings makes it less likely you’ll over indulge on sugar and calorie laden treats. Eating beforehand also gives you the chance to eat mindfully; be fully present for each bite. When you are socializing, it’s too easy to mindlessly eat far more than you would otherwise.

2. Take winter walks.

Walking is great exercise. Invite visiting relatives to join you on walks through local nature trails or just around the neighborhood. It’s a way to connect with family while still getting in plenty of activity. Plus, the exercise is good for relieving holiday stress.

3. It’s okay to say “no.”

If you feel like holiday obligations are running you ragged, be choosy about which ones you say yes to. If you are too stressed out to enjoy the holidays, that’s unfair to you and ultimately counterproductive.

4. Keep your routine as normal as possible.

Maintaining elements of your routine, like eating a healthy breakfast and going to exercise classes after work, can keep you from losing these valuable habits.

5. Bring healthy dishes to share.

If you are going to a potluck, offer to bring a dish to share. There are many festive options, such as quinoa salad or crisp crudites that you know you can enjoy without going too far off your usual daily diet.
