Making the Right Intention: Weight Loss that Lasts

Making the Right Intention Weight Loss that LastsBehind every medical weight loss success story is a person who committed themselves to achieving their dreams. Losing weight takes more than diet and exercise, it requires determination, drive, and no small degree of motivation.

There are two types of motivation in life: intrinsic and extrinsic. Extrinsic motivational factors include things that are external, or outside of your direct locus of control. This might include things like compliments from friends and family members on your weight loss, the number on a scale, or the size of a pair of pants. Intrinsic motivational factors are things that are more personal to you, such as your health, your attitude, or your perception of yourself.

Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors are helpful when you are working on losing weight. There are all sorts of reasons why you would want to lose weight in Columbus and Central Ohio, but when you are first developing your weight loss plan, you’ll want to think about which ones mean the most to you. Setting a strong intention for your weight loss success is key in reaching your ultimate weight loss goals.

Setting and Following a Weight Loss Plan

Setting a strong goal at the onset of your weight loss program can help carry you towards success. However, this goal shouldn’t be something open ended, like I want to lose weight. Create a goal that has time restrictions, that has milestones you can reach along the way and built in steps to take. Putting a lot of time and effort into developing your goal into a plan will make all the difference in the long-run.

Here are a few tips to help you get started:

  • Make your goal as SMART as possible. This means keeping it specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.
  • Write your goal down and make it at least semi-public. Having a place to go back to and using friends as sources of accountability will be essential as you continue progressing with medical weight loss.
  • Fuel your goal by setting both intrinsic and extrinsic motivational factors up along the way, this way you are constantly working towards something that is meaningful to you.

Medical weight loss can help those struggling to stick to their weight loss resolutions finally take charge of their health and successfully lose weight. Though some of your success will come from the helping hand of your weight loss program, following the rest of your healthy intentions through to the end is something you have complete control over.
